Miss Universe 1974, the 23rd edition of the pageant, was held on 21 July 1974 at the Folk Arts Theater in the Philippines, the first time the event took place in the Philippines and in Asia. Margarita Moran crowned Amparo Muñoz of Spain as Miss Universe 1974, marking Spain’s first win. Muñoz relinquished her title six months later after refusing a planned trip to Japan, and although first runner-up Helen Morgan later won Miss World 1974 (and resigned days after), the Miss Universe title was not passed on and Muñoz remained the official titleholder. Sixty-five contestants competed. The show was hosted by Bob Barker, with Helen O’Connell providing commentary. The event proceeded amid Typhoon Ivy affecting Luzon.
