Miss USA 1988, the 37th Miss USA pageant, was held in El Paso, Texas, on March 1, 1988, and televised live. Courtney Gibbs of Texas won, becoming the fourth consecutive Miss USA from Texas. It was the first time the pageant was held in Texas and the only time in El Paso. Alan Thicke hosted with Tracy Scoggins as commentator, replacing longtime host Bob Barker, who withdrew over the pageant’s fur-coat prize amid animal-rights protests; Scoggins was also assaulted during rehearsals.
