Miss USA 1957, the sixth Miss USA pageant, was held at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, on July 17, 1957, during the lead-up to Miss Universe. Mary Leona Gage of Maryland was initially crowned by Miss Universe 1956 Carol Morris, but was disqualified the next day when it was discovered she was 18, had been married twice, and had two children, violating eligibility rules. The title passed to 1st runner-up Charlotte Sheffield of Utah; other finalists moved up, and Kathryn Gabriel of Ohio became 4th runner-up. Because Miss Universe preliminary judging had already occurred, Sheffield could not compete, resulting in the only year the United States did not participate in Miss Universe. This edition remains the only Miss USA in which the winner was stripped of her title by organizers.
