Miss USA 1997, the 46th edition, took place at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana. Delegates arrived January 19, 1997; the preliminary competition was held February 2, and the final on February 5, broadcast live by CBS. Brook Lee of Hawaii was crowned by Ali Landry; after Lee won Miss Universe 1997, first runner-up Brandi Sherwood of Idaho assumed the Miss USA title, becoming the first Miss Teen USA winner and the first Idaho delegate to hold the crown. The show was hosted by George Hamilton with color commentary by Marla Maples Trump, and featured entertainment by Randy Newman. During the event, CBS entered a partnership with Donald Trump to co-own the Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe pageants. This was the first year delegates could choose one- or two-piece swimsuits for competition.
